Chemical Based Cleaners

  • Most contain ammonia and caustic ingredients, including butyls, acids and/or chemical based surfactants
  • Harmful to breathe, harmful if absorbed thru skin, very harmful if you ingest or get it in your eyes
  • Do they work? Yes! But at what price?

Oxygenating Compounds

  • Contain "sodium percarbonate", a bleach alternative
  • Safer than bleach? Yes. But not altogether non toxic (severe eye irritant, moderate skin irritant, harmful if ingested)
  • Really best used as a "bleach free laundry additive"

Orange Based Cleaners

  • It seems like everybody has an orange based cleaner these days
  • The active ingredient in these products is "d-limonene", which is derived from citrus peel
  • It falls in a class of chemicals categorized as "Citrus Terpenes"
  • It is VERY irritating to the eyes, nose, throat, skin & GI Tract
  • While it does work as a degreaser, it does not have properties of a surfactant (ie it does not lift dirt)
  • It can damage rubber, dull shines and remove paint
  • Best used as a degreaser on surfaces without a finish
